Engineered for a safe, smooth drive wherever you are, a BMW’s engine is designed for long-lasting performance. However, as with any car, after a few years, you may notice that your BMW isn’t functioning as smoothly as it once did. One issue you may have noticed is an oil leak in the engine, which can be identified by the growing puddle beneath your vehicle or the smell of burning oil whenever you’re driving. Whatever the case, here are a few other tells that your BMW’s engine has an oil leak.

Compromised Drain Plug

If your drain plug is worn down or broken, you can expect an oil leak to follow suit. Located at the bottom of your BMW, the drain plug is what allows the engine’s oil to leave the vehicle so it can be replaced with new oil. The plug could have been damaged during this removal process, preventing it from fitting back into place properly, or wear and tear could be the culprit. Over time, the drain plug can become corroded, rendering the seal ineffective. If this is the cause for your oil leak, then it’ll either need to be replaced completely or screwed back into place.

Valve Gasket Cover Issues

The integrity of your valve gasket cover plays a big role when it comes to prevents oil leaks in your engine. This cover seals the any and all oil into the areas it needs to be in while staying connected to the engine. The oil moves up towards the top of the engine before being sent back down beneath the valve cover, allowing the oil to trickle down to the intended areas through drainage holes. Any issues with the valve gasket cover will allow the oil to leak over the engine and onto the ground below.

Irregular Oil Changes

BMW themselves offer recommendations regarding how frequently you should be changing your oil depending on what model vehicle you own. Always follow their recommendations, as old oil that’s been sitting in your car for too long will corrode and break down the parts it’s flowing through. Filled with small particles, older oil can’t pull out as many impurities as it’s supposed to. Adjacent car parts will get worn down more quickly thanks to the particles, contamination, and sludge running through them. Get regular oil changes so you don’t damage your engine.
